Dr. James B. De Young

James_DeYoung.jpg James B. De Young is professor of New Testament Language and Literature at Western Seminary, Portland, OR, where he has taught for thirty-four years. Prior to this he taught at Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland (now Multnomah Bible College) from 1971 until 1975. He has a diploma from Moody Bible Institute (1962), a BA from East Texas Baptist University (1965), a BD (1968) and ThM (1969) from Talbot Theological Seminary, and a ThD (1973) from Dallas Theological Seminary. He has taught abroad (Holland, 1989) and traveled in Mexico (evangelism), Europe (teaching), and Afghanistan (outreach).

Since 1971, he has attended Damascus Community Church, Damascus, OR, where he has been an elder and continues to teach adults. He has preached from various pulpits in the Northwest.  He has served as chairman of the SaltShakers, a proactive community organization seeking to extend Christian values to the community.  He has served as chairman of the Hermeneutics section within the ETS since 1994.

He has published the following books: Beyond The Obvious:  Discover the Deeper Meaning of Scripture (Co-authored with Sarah L. Hurty; Gresham:  Vision House, 1995); A Syntax Reader for the Greek New Testament (Eugene:  Wipf & Stock, 2002); Homosexuality:  Contemporary Claims Examined in Light of the Bible and Other Ancient Literature and Law (Grand Rapids:  Kregel, 2000); Terrorism, Islam, and Christian Faith (Eugene:  Resource Publications, 2004); a commentary on the Epistles of John in The Evangelical Commentary on the Bible; and has written articles for Bibliotheca Sacra, Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, Masters Seminary Journal, The Best in Theology, vol. 4 (1990), The Gospels and the Scriptures of Israel (1994) and other publications.

He began presenting papers for the Northwest regional meetings of the Evangelical Theological Society in 1981; and every year since 1992 he has presented papers for both the regional and national meetings of the Evangelical Theological Society; and once for the Society of Biblical Literature. These papers have covered a wide range of topics including moral issues (homosexuality), textual criticism, world view, 1 Clement, the Septuagint, the role of women in the church, the meaning of “the law” and general revelation in the NT, the quotations from the OT as used in the NT, hermeneutics, universalism, and have addressed a host of exegetical problems in the NT (from Hebrews, Galatians, Revelation, 1 John, and others).

He has been married to Patricia for 44 years, has four married children, and ten grandchildren.  He lives in the country where he has a mini farm and raises rhododendrons, Christmas trees, and beef cattle.
